Demag process cranes for mine application

Düsseldorf,   13.07.2012

  • Maintenance cranes for semi-mobile crushers supplied by ThyssenKrupp
  • Rugged crane systems ensure availability under harsh ambient conditions
  • Ideal service concept

Demag Cranes has been awarded a contract by ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH to supply three process cranes. The identical crane systems will be used to equip semi-mobile crushers which ThyssenKrupp will deliver to copper mines in Zambia. The cranes, which have load capacities of 80 tonnes, will be employed for maintenance and repair work on the crushers. The process cranes are scheduled for delivery at the end of 2012.

The crane installations are being built at the process crane factory in Slany, Czech Republic, before being shipped to Zambia together with the crushers. “The international structure of Demag Cranes played a decisive role in the award of the contract. Thanks to our regional subsidiary in South Africa, we are also able to provide our customers there with the same high level of service quality and short response times”, explains Dr. Lars Brzoska, Executive Vice President with responsibility for Industrial Cranes at Demag Cranes.

“In the past, Demag Cranes has already supplied cranes that have been in operation for many years for other companies in the ThyssenKrupp group. Out of this co-operation grew our customer’s confidence in our rugged lifting and drive solutions, which are particularly necessary in this outdoor application”, adds Lutz Dowy, Head of Process Cranes at Demag Cranes. “By adding a strong service concept, we again demonstrated our ability to meet ThyssenKrupp’s needs.”

Demanding availability and performance requirements
The scope of the order for Demag Cranes includes the delivery of three ZKKW double-girder cranes that have load capacities of 80 tonnes and a span of 12.5 metres. The radio-controlled process cranes will be installed on a crane runway, where the semi-mobile crushers are also installed, and will be responsible for handling the machine parts for maintenance purposes. The multi-purpose open winch crabs (MPW) on the cranes are rated for a lifting height of up to 35 metres. To facilitate access for maintenance and repair purposes throughout the installations, the crane girders will be equipped with a walkway and the crabs will also be provided with working platforms. By means of Demag pole-changing motors and mechanical micro speed units, the availability of the crane installations is also ensured, even under the extremely harsh ambient conditions that are typical for copper mines.

Demag Service close to the customer all over the world
Demag Cranes has the world’s largest installed base of electric cranes and hoists and is represented by a corresponding service organisation all over the globe. A major network of qualified service engineers ensures the availability of Demag crane installations all over the world with a comprehensive portfolio of service products. Besides its crane plant in Boksburg near Johannesburg, Demag Cranes operates nine sales and service centres to provide customers with support in their direct vicinity in South Africa.

Order for ThyssenKrupp
Three semi-mobile crusher installations are being supplied as primary crusher systems to copper mines in Zambia. Equipped with KB 63-89 gyratory crushers by ThyssenKrupp, which are the most powerful currently available in this market segment, the systems will each be capable of handling 3,600 tonnes of copper ore per hour. They are scheduled to enter service in 2014. This order is one of the biggest in the history of Thyssen Krupp Fördertechnik’s Ennigerloh location.
