The next step: Demag V-type crane up to 50 t

Following the worldwide launch of the V-type single-girder crane, the Demag range of cranes has been extended: with its ZVKE, Terex Material Handling has presented a double-girder overhead travelling crane which will cover the load capacity range up to 50 tons in future. The V-type double-girder crane is offered with a span of up to 35 m as standard, longer girder lengths can be supplied on request.

“Following the positive response from the market for our V-type crane, we are taking the next step and are offering this crane type as a double-girder design”, explains Andreas Hambrock, Senior Director of the Universal and Modular Cranes Business Line at Terex Material Handling. “With our ZVKE, we are sending a strong message and consistently pursue our strategy to offer this crane with an extended load capacity range.”

Lower weight
A significant feature of the V-type crane is the reduced weight of the crane girder compared with cranes that have box-section girders. The average weight saving for the single-girder design is 17%. Thanks to the construction with two crane girders, the share of the reduced girder weight is correspondingly higher in relation to the crane. This results in possible load capacity increases for an overhead travelling crane, which can consequently be equipped with a rope hoist that has a higher load capacity. This means that a ZVKE double-girder crane can transport higher unit loads – and achieves a total weight including the suspended load that is no higher than a crane which has a box-section girder. As a consequence, the crane runway and building superstructure are not subjected to any higher loads, despite the higher load capacity. Capacity increases up to the next higher load capacity are, therefore, possible and existing building concepts can be utilised even better.

Precise positioning of sensitive goods
A further benefit compared to the box-section girder is the ability to handle loads more quickly, since the crane system is inherently more rigid thanks to its mechanically connected girders. This enables loads and sensitive goods to be transported and positioned even more gently and precisely.

Exact adaptation to match building geometry
The V-type double-girder crane is offered in four different designs. The side connection of the end carriages to the girder is a feature that they all share. The different types are distinguished by the shape of the girder ends and their vertical position with reference to the connection. This ensures that the crane design can be adapted in the best possible way to the volume of existing buildings. For new buildings, the space between the crane and building roof can be reduced. This factor saves costs for the building structure and for its upkeep and maintenance.

If the headroom available in existing buildings allows sufficient scope, a further weight-saving factor can be employed. The girder height can be extended when the headroom dimension of a V-type crane is specified – and this enables further weight to be saved. This benefit can be utilised where the building superstructure allows only little scope for loads.

Precise crab runways and torsion-free crane girders
The ZVKE offers even more precision with reference to its crab runway. Placing the crab rail in the middle of the V-type crane girder also results in a balanced distribution of forces and the crane girder remains free of any torsion. Thanks to its V-type design with vertical struts, the load-dependent forces exerted by the rope hoist crab are transferred vertically to the girders. This benefit results in minimised wear on the crab rail and crab trolley system.
In this way, the V-type double-girder crane ensures that the track gauge of the crab runway is precisely maintained.

More light – improved safety
Thanks to its girder design, which is based on bionic principles, the V-type crane, particularly in the double-girder variant, allows much more light to pass compared with solid crane girders.
